Ernogrammus zhirmunskii Prickleback Protecting Eggs

This is a male seven-lined prickleback (Ernogrammus zhirmunskii) watching over a clutch of eggs deep inside a narrow cervice among volcanic boulders. Eggs of this species are characterized by projections that look like spikes. This may help to hold the eggs together and faciliate aeration. Photographed in Hokkaido, Japan.
