This is a Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) in the open ocean of the Ogasawara archipelago of Japan. Known as the Bonin Islands in English, the islands are about 1000km southeast of Tokyo. This whale was one of a pair traveling far offshore at high speed. Note that the whale's body is covered with scars that were left by the bites of cookie cutter sharks (Isistius brasilienses). Photographed in Ogasawara, Japan.
