This is a Southern Asian Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus curilus), a fish in the salmon family (Salmonidae). This species comprises resident populations; anadromous groups; and populations that are migratory within freshwater systems. Most populations in Japan are nonnanadromous. This individual was part of a resident river population. It was foraging for food at the bottom of a small waterfall created by an erosion control dam. Such dams fragment rivers and streams, increasing risk of localized extinction due to diminished range and genetic diversity. This species is found in northern Japan, Korea, the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. Photographed in Hokkaido, Japan.
