This is a pair of Japanese stream toads (Bufo torrenticola) engaged in amplexus. The male on top maintains his grasp on the female in order to fertilize eggs that she releases. He also has to protect his position when other males inevitably challenge and attempt to dislodge him. Photographed in Mie Prefecture, Japan.
