Male Humpback Whale Intimate Social Activity
I watched these three humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) socialize for several hours. At one point, the three humpback whales merged into this whirlwind-like formation. Their behaviour was so intimate at times that I initially thought there were two males competing for the attention of a female. It took some time to verify the sex of the whales. When I was finally able to do so, it came as a surprise to discover that all three were males. Photographed in the Kingdom of Tonga.
