This is a male Liparis tanakae snailfish checking freshly spawned eggs. A female approached, checked his collection of eggs, then rubbed her abdomen against the fishing net, depositing eggs in the process. She departed immediately. This male fertilized, then spent considerable time pushing to secure the eggs in the net. Here he is checking progress. These fish use discarded fishing nets as spawning substrate in this location. There is no seaweed available for this purpose, due in part to bottom trawling by fishermen. Photographed in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
