Turbulent river waters can provide cover for small fish like this Southern Asian Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus curilus), which do well to hide from hungry predators lurking above. This salmonid species is found in northern Japan, Korea, the Kuril Islands and Sakhalins, with groups comprising resident populations; anadromous groups; and populations that are migratory within freshwater systems. This individual was part of a resident river population. It was foraging for food at the bottom of a small waterfall created by an erosion control dam. Such dams reduce flooding risk for humans, but they also fragment rivers and streams, increasing risk of localized extinction for aquatic species due to diminished range and genetic diversity. Photographed in Hokkaido, Japan.
