This is a salmonid fish known as Yamame in Japanese. It is the fresh water form of Oncorhynchus masou. The anadromous form of the same species is known as sakura-masu in Japanese, masu salmon in English. Yamame stay in rivers, while the much larger sakura-masu mature in the ocean and return to fresh water to spawn. The two forms can spawn together. Some juveniles remain in fresh water, while others travel to the sea. Dividing the population into fresh- and salt-water groups diversifies risk. Photographed in Hokkaido, Japan.
